The US-Japan Youth Forum

Welcome! Asia Society is pleased to present this web-based exchange program that allows youth around the world to work with one another on topics of mutual interest. To get started, visit the PROJECT SHOWCASE and SKILLS TOOLBOX.

If you'd like to start a project of your own, you can register with the Youth Forum to gain access to the Members area of the site. (See Registration Help.) The Members area lists all Available Projects and provides Teachers' Modules with lesson plans showing how to incorporate the Youth Forum projects.

Orientation

The Youth Forum website is a web-based exchange program that allows youth around the world to work with one another on topics of mutual interest. The main site, available to all, features the Project Showcase and Skills Toolbox. You can also get access to the Members Area, once you have registered with the Youth Forum.

Project Showcase

The Project Showcase highlights completed projects from the Youth Forum. You can use the Project Showcase to get ideas for creating your own projects or as a reference tool on the topics covered by the projects. You can also develop your own language lessons (outside of the Youth Forum) by sending students to review both the English and Japanese versions. For example:

Sample Assignment using Project Showcase
  1. Read the Discovery Project Kanji in English and Japanese.
  2. Answer this question in both English and Japanese:
When and why did the Japanese borrow the kanji script from the Chinese and Koreans?

Skills Toolbox

The Skills Toolbox features a number of on-line activities and handouts designed to help students practice critical thinking and analytical skills. You can use these activities during lesson planning or to enhance lessons in the classroom. For example,

Sample Assignment using Skills Toolbox
  1. Read Analyze This: Six Ways to Read Faster and More Effectively.
  2. Answer this question.
What are two ways to determine cause and effect?

Not sure what else we should put in Orientation.

Welcome to the Youth Forum Project Showcase! We invite you to peruse the Showcase and see what your class can do through collaborative project work. Check back often to see the latest innovative examples of what can happen when students learn with - not just about - one another.

For more information, see About Projects.

Skills Toolbox

Welcome to the Skills Toolbox, which features a number of on-line activities and handouts designed to help students practice critical thinking and analytical skills. There are simple steps that will help students gain the necessary knowledge and skills for the information-driven world of the future.

You can use these tools by themselves or in conjunction with Projects you create on the Youth Forum. For example, if you pick a Forum Project on Reducing Pollution in the Environment, you may want to supplement it with a handout from the Skills Toolbox on Persuasive Writing. See an example. [LINK]
