I-884, The Education Initiative Campaign Going Strong!

The campaign to get I-884, the Education Initiative, on the November ballot is in full swing and building momentum.  Volunteers around the state are gathering signatures and spreading the word about this initiative which will help students across Washington from preschool to college.

I-884 already has many early endorsers, including:

  • Washington State PTA
  • Washington Education Association
  • Washington Association of School Administrators (school superintendents)
  • Washington Association of School Business Officers
  • Washington Association for Education of Young Children (WAEYC)
  • Washington State Association of Head Start & ECEAP
  • Community & Technical Colleges Council, Washington Federation of Teachers
  • King County Labor Council
  • Auburn Council PTA
  • Issaquah Council PTA
  • Kent Council PTA

I-884 is the right thing to do to help our kids and our schools, and voters across the state agree!

Send in your signatures!

Before voters get the chance to say YES to creating an Education Trust Fund, we must first get I-884 onto the ballot.  Just as we needed your help to write the initiative, we need your help again to get I-884, the Education Initiative, in front of voters.  We must gather 280,000 signatures by the end of June, just to give voters the opportunity to decide next November.

If you have completed petitions, don’t risk misplacing them -- send them in as soon as possible.  Every signature is crucial, so remember to send in all your petitions, even if they aren’t completely filled out.  Just put your name on the return address so we can give you credit, put a stamp on the petition and mail it in.

If you haven’t yet gotten a petition to sign or you need some more, let us know!  If everyone takes a few minutes to mail in as many signatures as they can and to spread the word, we will be guaranteed a slot on the November 2004 ballot.  Remember, whether you gather one or one hundred, every signature gets us closer, so send them all in!

To help out with signature gathering, just hit reply to this email and let us know you are interested.  There are lots of easy ways to help.  This past Friday, students at Green River Community College set up a table on campus and gathered 164 signatures in just a few hours!  Make sure to get your petitions, too- give us your name, address, and phone number, and we will get you what you need to get started.  You can also sign up at our website:  http://www.educationvoters.org/

Other ways to help!
Gathering signatures isn’t the only help we need.  Here are some other easy ideas:

Help in the office:  I-884 is a busy campaign and we need all the help we can get! If you are in the Puget Sound area and can help with office work like mailings, data entry, phone calls, and filing, we need that help, too.  Just reply to this message with a note that you are interested in helping out in the office, or call Katie Dick at 206-728-6448.

Donate:  Your donation will help us get the word out to other education supporters.  It costs us money to mail petitions out to interested volunteers.  We will also be traveling across the state to talk to community groups, putting advertisements in local newspapers, and messages on radio and television.  Your donation will support all of this.

To make an online credit card donation of any size, just visit: http://www.educationvoters.org/884_help.htm .  This is an investment that will return huge benefits to our children and our state, please consider giving an amount that is significant for you.

You may also make checks out to Citizens for the Education Trust Fund, and mail them to PO Box 1727, Seattle, WA  98111.

Donations to the Citizens for the Education Trust Fund are not tax-deductible.

Endorse I-884:  Present I-884 to your school board, parent group, or other organization for endorsement and let us know the results!  Your endorsement is a powerful way to spread the message that education matters in Washington state.  You can find an endorsement form at our website:  http://www.educationvoters.org/

Spread the word:  We need your help to make sure school supporters all across the state know about I-884 and the Education Trust Fund.  You can start now by inviting others to join this grassroots movement.   It’s easy!  Just click  Tell-a-friend! so they will hear the latest news on the Education Trust Fund.  Remember, every voice counts!
