Addressing the 5 "C's" Using the Youth Forum Interactive Website
Presented by Michele Anciaux Aoki at WAFLT Conference March 20, 2004 PLU
For more information about Youth Forum, contact Grace Norman (GRACEN@AsiaSoc.org).
Youth Forum is a free, interactive website being developed by the Asia
Society, in conjunction with National Geographic. Youth Forum is designed to
support "virtual" exchanges between schools in Japan and America in English
and Japanese, initially, with other languages and countries added over time.
The site will feature Teachers' Modules or lesson plans on a variety of topics
designed to help students meet standards in social studies and world languages
through completion of Youth Forum projects.
Project templates available on the site make it easy to upload and share
presentations in several formats:
- Forum (like an email bulletin board)
- Newsletter (for sharing stories)
- Virtual Gallery (for art work and photos).
In this session, we'll demonstrate sample lesson plans and show
how Youth Forum projects can help you address the 5 "C's" of the National
Foreign Language Standards: Communication, Cultures, Connections,
Comparisons, Communities.
Sample Lessons:
The 5 C's of the National Standards for Foreign Language offer a helpful
guide for creating effective lessons in the World Language classroom. Several
states have developed extensive Foreign Language Frameworks based on the 5
"C's" that include targeted Learning Scenarios. In today's session
we'll be working with Learning Scenarios from the Nebraska K-12 Foreign
Language Frameworks http://www.nde.state.ne.us/FORLG/Frameworks/Frameworks.pdf.
They are adapted here with permission of the Nebraska State Department of
Education.
The Progress Indicators are categorized into three levels: beginning,
developing, and expanding, according to the complexity of language needed to
accomplish the stated task. See http://www.nde.state.ne.us/FORLG/Frameworks/Frameworks.pdf
p. 15 for details.
